14 Year Old Pleads No Contest In Fatal Shooting Of Another Teen

A 14-year-old pleaded no contest Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old during a marijuana deal.

In exchange for Tyon Wells’ no-contest plea to second-degree murder, prosecutors dropped three other felony charges — second-degree assault and two firearms charges.

He faces a maximum of life in prison and a minimum of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in January.

Officials have said Wells planned to buy marijuana from Zachary Parker and Devon Darnell, both 17. Wells pulled out a gun and demanded the drugs, prosecutors have said, then shot Parker in the back and Darnell in the right arm during the Feb. 25 meeting.

Parker, a North High School junior, died at the hospital. Darnell survived.

Wells’ attorney attempted to transfer the case to juvenile court, but Judge Shelly Stratman decided that he should be tried as an adult, citing his gang ties, drug use and experience handling guns.

Three people who attended the hearing for Parker declined to comment. A dozen people who were there for Wells also declined to comment.
